چکیده

In this paper, a new approach to forward scatter of radio waves from meteor trails is exposed. The attention is drawn to some macroscopic characteristics of a meteor plasma and it is shown that electron-ion collision frequency is not negligible, as commonly thought. A simple formula for calculations of radio waves maximum attenuation after the forward scattering is also pre-

On the meteor height from forward scatter radio observations

It is known from theory that, by means of a plasma physics approach, it is possible to obtain a simple formula to calculate the approximate height of a meteor (Foschini, 1999). This formula can be used in case of forward scatter of radio waves and has the advantage that it does not depend on the diffusion coefficient. On the other hand, it is possible to apply the formula to a particular type o...

Interpretation of non-specular radar meteor trails

[1] Radar data of non-specular meteor trails shows two clear and consistent features: (1) non–specular meteor trails are observed from a narrower altitude range than are head echoes and (2) an approximately 20 ms delay between meteor head echoes and trail radar scatter. This paper shows that both features can result from meteor trail plasma instability. Simulations have demonstrated that trails...

A Meteor Burst Communication System with Dynamic Channel Estimation and Variable Modulation Type

A software modem for Meteor Burst Communication (MBC) is presented. The software is running on a DSP board, connected to a PC for user interface. MBC is a unique type of radio communication, which is suitable for non-realtime remote data collection. Forward scattering of radio waves from ionized trails of meteors provides reliable communication channel for path lengths from 300 to 2000 km and i...

Dependence of radar signal strength on frequency and aspect angle of nonspecular meteor trails

[1] When a meteoroid penetrates Earth’s atmosphere, it forms a high-density ionized plasma column immersed in the ionosphere between approximately 70 and 140 km altitude. High-power, large-aperture (HPLA) radars detect nonspecular trails when VHF or UHF radio waves reflect off structures in a turbulent meteor trail. These trails persist from a few milliseconds to many minutes and the return fro...

Using Artificial Neural Networks for Meteor-Burst Communications Trail Prediction

The use of meteor ionisation trails as ‘cheap satellites’ to reflect radio waves between two points on the earth's surface is an established technique, called Meteor Burst Communications (MBC). For MBC systems to take advantage of the different amplitude and duration patterns of different trail types it is necessary to predict these patterns from features of initial signals reflected from the t...
